Journal 4

Due Friday, September 9

Descriptive

Think of a pet (or animal that you know). Wrtie a description of this animal.

Ideas: You may include what your pet looks like, the demeanor disposition of your pet, what you pet likes or doesn't like, or your pet's habits. For one of your paragraphs, you might explain your detail by including a little story about the animal.

Prewriting Reminders:

1.  Pick the pet you want to write about.

2. State your effect. (How do you want your readers to picture your pet? How do you want them to feel about your pet?

3.  Choose three points you want to highlight about your pet. Make your three jot dot circles and fill them with details.

Remember, you will need five paragraphs: an introduction, one for each of the three jot dot circles, and one for the conclusion.

Journal 5

Due Date: Friday, September 16

Descriptive

Topic: Describe your favorite store. What  do you like about this store? Describe your favorite store so that your reader will be able to imagine it clearly.

Prewriting:

Complete the prewriting the same way you have been -- three points filled with details. Think of three topics for your three middle paragraphs. (Remember, we talked about this when you did the restaurant description)

Writing Tips: How can you write long enough paragraphs? Show - don't tell. Avoid vague statements like "The rack was full."  Instead, "show" the rack to the reader: "Sweaters snuggled next to each other on the rack so closely that I had trouble pulling out the ones I wanted to try on."

Journal 6

Due Date: Friday, September 23

Remember, stories have a problem that is solved. They are not just a listing of events.

Limit this narrative to just one event, not a whole trip. For example, if you went to Six Flags, write about riding on one scary ride. Build up to the climax of the story when you actually survived the ride. If you went to the beach, tell about one experience on that trip. If you write about the whole trip, it will not be a narrow enough topic, and you will not receive full credt.

Narrative

Topic: Most of us are looking forward to fall break. For this journal, think back to another vacation and write a narrative telling about a favorite experience (one big moment) you had.

Prewriting: Use the plan for narrative writing.

Focus: Include some dialogue in your narrative to bring the story to life. Make sure to indent for each speak and correctly use punctuation and capitalization. You will not receive full credit without at least several sentence of dialogue (conversation). Remember to begin a new paragraph for each new speaker.

Journal 7

Due Date: Friday, September 30, 2011

Descriptive

Topic:Every home has some sort of kitchen. Describe a kitchen. It could be the kitchen in your home or one that you have spent time in such as your grandmother's kitchen. It could also be your dream kitchen instead of a real place.

Prewriting: Use the same prewriting method - three main points and plenty of details.

A strong introduction and conclusion are key! Remember the sample lesson in class?
